Serb National Council gathering banned in Kraljevo

Kraljevo Police banned a gathering that was prepared by the Serb National Council from Kosovska Mitrovica. ''The gathering was disallowed. We have lived to see our own government act this way'', said SNC leader for Mitrovica, Oliver Ivanovic. Ivanovic told reporters he believed that the meeting was banned because the authorities were afraid that Otpor might have participated in the event and given it a political connotation.

SNC Vice President Marko Jaksic and other members, who were to speak at yesterday's gathering in Kraljevo, were stopped by the police in Rudnica at the administrative border between Kosovo and Serbia proper, and prevented them from continuing their journey to Kraljevo. Ivanovic, who addressed the crowd without audio equipment, announced gradual resettlement of Kosovo Serbs would start sometime next month. He also announced a rally of displaced Serbs from Kosovo in Kraljevo central square for July 17. The SNC plan for resettlement foresees a gradual resettlement of 15,000 Serbs who currently live in Kraljevo. Serbs should return to their homes in the villages in the municipalities of Istok, Pec and Klina. Ivanovic gave a 30-day ultimatum to the international community organise the resettlemnt and said that if they failed to do so, SNC would organise it themselves. He added that the gathering on July 17. would symbolise the start of the resettlemnt programme. There are 30,000 refugees from Kosovo in Kraljevo. The Serbian National Council from Mitrovica plans to resettle 15,000 people
